Career Planning, Graduate Entry Medicine

Applying to medical school?

In order to gain a place in medical school you will have to meet the entry requirements for that particular school.   It is essential that you check up the requirements with each school before applying as these can change each year.

All admissions to universities in the United Kingdom are administered by  UCAS (Universities and College Admissions Service) and your completed online application must be submitted by October 15th in the year before entry.

As a university student or graduate, you must register as an individual applicant. To complete your application, you need to provide the following information:

  • Personal details: Name, date of birth, address etc
  • Education: include all grades including those that you would rather forget! Any offer can be withdrawn if you do not make a full disclosure. Any admissions tests you have taken (eg UKCAT, GAMSAT) can be entered in this section.
  • Choices: you can choose a maximum of four medical degree courses including graduate entry and standard degree courses and enter them in any order as they will be sorted alphabetically. You can leave the 5th course choice blank or select a different degree subject.
  • Employment: this can be full-time, part-time or voluntary employment
  • Personal statement: This is your opportunity to talk about your motivation for medicine, and to reflect on your shadowing, patient-care experience, and volunteering activities. You only have 4,000 characters including spaces and line breaks so be concise, and do spell check your statement. Finally, please make sure that your statement is your own work; UCAS uses anti-plagiarism detection software of all applications.
  • Academic reference: This section of the online application is changing on 28 September. Before 28 September, if you copy and paste your reference into your application and mark the section as completed then this will be attached to your application; after 28 September, you will need to enter your referee’s name and e-mail address and UCAS will send that person a link to enable them to enter the reference directly and you will not be given the opportunity to view this reference.

When you have marked each section as complete, you will be able to submit the application and UCAS will then request payment of an application fee.

  • Payment: The cost is £21 and you can make payment by credit or debit card online.

Once you’ve sent it off, all there is to do is sit back and wait for the post.
